On April 5, 2025, the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) initiated the rulemaking process to identify “high-priority pesticides,” which may warrant increased use restrictions, registration cancellation, and/or expedited registration of feasible alternatives.
DPR is proposing a process by which the department will form, and solicit nominations for, a scientific advisory committee that will be tasked with identifying and reviewing potential priority active ingredients. The scientific advisory committee will be made up of 15 members with expertise in chemical and environmental science to sit for two-year terms. Appointments are anticipated to begin in the Summer 2025.
Each year, DPR will determine eight priority pesticides, providing four themselves and soliciting two each from the scientific advisory committee and the public. Pesticides identified as priorities will be ranked in order of importance based on their impacts to human health, aquatic organisms, pollinators, and terrestrial organisms, as well as the availability of feasible alternatives or additional use restrictions.
The Department is seeking public comments on the proposed process. Ag Council is closely monitoring the rulemaking and working with stakeholders to provide detailed comments on behalf of our members.
